Do I have to tell my parents that I am seeing a social worker?

No.  In Ontario, anyone over the age of 12 can seek professional help from any therapist or doctor without their parents’ permission

However; in some cases parents can be your greatest allies in this process and we will only involve them when necessary and when you are good and ready.

Who is going to know what we talk about?

Everything that we talk about is confidential, regardless of your family’s involvement.  I will not share anything that we talk about without your permission.  The only time I have to share information is if you disclose that you or someone else under the age of 16 is in danger of being hurt.

Is there a fee?

Yes.  Most professional services in Ontario have a fee attached.  This might be the reason why would want to tell your parents that you are seeing a social worker, to help you cover the cost.

Is there insurance to help cover the cost?

Ontario Health Insurance Program does not cover the cost of Social Workers.  However, many insurance plans will cover a portion of the cost.  A quick phone call can help you to answer this question.
